We met with some friendly locals about updating and adding a single storey addition to their Califorian Bungalow positioned in an ideal location not too far from Williamstown beach, but far enough to avoid the traffic of an often-busy city beach.

The aims were to improve the layout and work to their warm style.

We studied the local architecture to see how best to tackle the additions. The house is located in a heritage area so we needed to have a link that could differentiate the old from the new. We had to bring the roof down in a section to achieve this.

The design aimed to give the parents a separate space. They are located to the rear to enjoy the garden views. The middle of the house is bathed in light. This was through large skylights and also the use of large glazing to high gabled ceiling. The lot was not huge, so we kept ceiling heights as high as possible to give a greater feeling of space.

Interior design by Yahnay took in natural materials such as timber and stone to ground the interior and give warmth and depth.

The house was built by Sencon homes that related well to the clients and followed our design and surfaces to achieve a great result.
